James W. Barrett, CPA/PFS, MST

Partner

Jim, who holds a Masters Degree in Taxation, is a Certified Public Accountant licensed in Massachusetts and Connecticut, and holds a Personal Financial Specialist credential. The PFS accreditation was established for CPAs who specialize in personal financial planning and is awarded exclusively to members of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants who have demonstrated considerable experience and expertise in that area. The CPA/PFS designation is held by less than one percent of the CPAs in the United States.

In the Taxation practice, Jim works with public and privately held commercial companies, partnerships, and individuals. In addition to tax compliance, his engagement experience includes consulting on accounting periods and methods, review of corporate tax provisions, computation of corporate earnings and profits, and mergers and acquisitions.

In the Financial Planning and Wealth Management Services practice, Jim assists clients in integrating and managing issues concerning life and wealth. These issues include pre- and post-retirement planning, estate and gift tax planning, income tax planning, investment planning, education planning, insurance planning, and charitable giving.

Jim joined Joseph D. Kalicka and Company in 2002. Prior to that, he was a Senior Tax Manager for KPMG, LLP, from 1987 through 2001.

Jim received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Western New England College and a Master of Science in Taxation from Florida International University. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants.  Jim serves as Treasurer on the Executive Committee of the Massachusetts Chamber of Business and Industry, a state-wide organization that provides information, education, management and advocacy on behalf of  industry.  He is also a member of the Western New England Chapter of the Young Presidents Organization.

When he isn’t working, you can typically find Jim with a fishing pole in his hands. The winner of Massachusetts Freshwater Fishing Awards for an eight-pound lake trout he landed in 2006 and a six-pound salmon he caught in 2004, Jim also enjoys saltwater fishing; he once took a 30-pound striper, and travels once a year to fish Lake Ontario, where his best catch to date is the 32-pound salmon he reeled in in 2005.
